Christmas in July and Bethel Blast

It was hot but we survived! Christmas in July was a great time on Sat., July 3rd, in West Jefferson - we sang at 12noon and had fun listening to the antics of Arvill Scott - we appreciate being invited to sing there year after year - we sure have fun and love getting to be back in Ashe County!

Bethel Blast was, well, a blast, as usual. We're always treated so well and love singing there, as that is where most of us went to school - it's great to give something back to the community........the boys loved playing with their friends, watching the fireworks, and winning prizes from the kids' games. We're looking forward to next year's Blast!

National Heritage Area and Fall Creek Church

We traveled down to Asheville to sing at the Welcome Center for the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area - we are in their Traditional Artist Directory and were invited to do a performance in their theater. We sang for about 45 minutes or so and got to meet a lot of friendly folks and appreciate their encouragement!

Fall Creek Church had a singing service on Sunday, June 27th - we've been attending singings there for just about every year since we started singing as a group, about 17 years ago. We thank Boyd McCloud for inviting us there for one of our first singings!

Southside Church and Pineola Baptist

Southside had a fundraiser for their youth group's Black Light Drama team on Sat., June 12th - we were asked to be a part of it and got a huge blessing out of being there. The team did several of their songs - they will be competing in Oklahoma in July - pray for their travels, competition, and safety!

We were pleased to be back at Pineola Baptist for their homecoming on Sun., June 13th - the service was great - the message was wonderful - and the food was delicious! We also got to meet Jimmy's daughter, Brittney - she is a beautiful young lady and very sweet!

Trade Mill Singing and Proffits Grove

We went over the TN line into Trade, TN, and sang at a gospel sing there on Saturday, June 5th. There was a pretty good crowd and we got to see a lot of folks and enjoyed visiting and fellowshipping!

Proffits Grove is the first church that the "new" SA played at with Jimmy and Leonard being members. The guys did great and it felt as if they'd been with us for years. They put a lot of work into learning the songs and instrumentals and we appreciate their dedication. We met Jimmy's wife, Crystal - she is a sweetheart!! Leonard's wife, Lesa, came too and my boys refer to her as, "the little girl that's a mom," because she is so petite - LOL!

p.s. we also introduced Jimmy and Crystal to Dos Amigos Mexican Restaurant in Boone, and I think they have found a new favorite restaurant ;)

New Members for Southern Accent

We are proud to announce that Jimmy Kerley and Leonard Arnold have joined Southern Accent.

Jimmy Kerley:
Jimmy's earliest memories of music was hearing his Mom playing guitar and singing old songs like An Old Log Cabin For Sale and old gospel hymns. Over the years he has been very blessed to have had the opportunity to play in bands with his close friends and family. Jimmy's favorite groups are The Seldom Scene, Flatt and Scruggs, Tony Rice, and Doyle Lawson; however his main influence will always be Mike Auldridge. Playing a resonator guitar made by Tooter Meredith and a Martin HD 28 guitar, Jimmy will help give Southern Accent a new sound. In 2000 Jimmy married his wife Crystal, whom he loves dearly. He has a daughter, Brittney, who hes feel is the greatest daughter a Daddy could ask for, saying, "the Lord has blessed me." Jimmy and his wife attend Three Forks Baptist Church in Taylorsville, NC. He believes that salvation thru the blood of Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven, there is no other way. "I give Him praise for everything good that has happened in my life."

Leonard Arnold:
Leonard's biggest musical influence was his dad, George Arnold, who taught him his first chords on the guitar when Leonard was only 8 years old. Over time, his dad continued to show him more oand more about different types of instruments. They both played in churches together in groups that his dad had, but Leonard mostly remembers sitting around the house on Sunday afternoons on the front porch playing with his family of 9 siblilngs, who can almost al play music. Leonard plays a Morgan Monroe mm300 mandolin and a Antonio Strativarius-copy fiddle. He will be having a big part vocally in Southern Accent with lead and harmony vocals. Leonard is married to Lesa, his wife of 7 years, and has 2 children - Andrew and Jenn - who all encourage him and says he is "thankful to have a wife that supports me in my music ministry." The Arnolds attend Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Mountain City, at which Leonard is also the pianist in the choir. Leonard was raised in several Baptist churches, where his father was the pastor. Leonard thanks everyone that has supported him over the years in his music and thanks Southern Accent for the chance to serve the Lord in song.

A lot of prayers went up to the Lord to show us who we needed to ask to be in Southern Accent, and we were led to these two fine, Christian men. We know that you all will enjoy hearing them with Southern Accent!

Gary Trivette and Blake Vance will now be with the group, Carolina Crossing. We wish them the best!

Harmony Baptist Church

We took a ride down to Harmony, NC, to sing at Harmony Baptist on Sunday, May 30th - it was scorching hot down there, but thankfully, we got to sing in a beautiful, air-conditioned sanctuary :)

We enjoyed being with those folks again and look forward to the next time of fellowship with them!

Cranberry Baptist and Henson's Creek

We were glad to be able to come back to Cranberry Baptist and fellowship with the folks there on Saturday, May 22nd. Several people in the congregation were testifying and also encouraging Southern Accent in our ministry, and that meant so much.

Sunday, May 23rd, we went to Henson's Creek - this is one of the first churches that we ever sang at and we were remembering that Pete and Hattibell Presnell took us there to sing in one of the revival services many, many years ago - we've sang there ever since! We enjoyed the refreshments in the fellowship hall for the "May Birthdays!"

Fellowship Celebration May 15th

Our Fellowship Celebration went very well again this year!

A lot of people were in attendance and we were so happy to get to visit with our friends all day long.

We started at 1130 with the welcome, announcements, etc., then lunch began with hotdogs and the fixings.

Music was performed all day long with some new groups that hadn't been at the celebration before - we did miss having the Harmon Family with us, but Tommy wasn't feeling well - please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

All-in-all, a great day and we look forward to next year's Celebration, which is the Saturday AFTER Mother's Day.

Fellowship Celebration Update

We received news that The Harmon Family will not be able to join us this year at our Fellowship Celebration due to Tommy not feeling well. Tommy has battled cardiac disease for many years, and we ask that you all pray for him and his family - they mean so much to all of us in Southern Accent...

The Norris Family from down at South Fork Baptist Church have accepted the invitation to sing at the 1pm time on Saturday. This family has wonderful harmonies and sing beautiful hymns and gospel numbers with piano accompaniment.

Beaver Dam Church Mother's Day Service

Beaver Dam Baptist Church invites us annually to their Mother's Day service and this year, we were privileged again to attend.

We sang for about 45 minutes before breaking for a short Sunday School lesson...afterwards, we sang a few more songs, then Preacher Carl brought a message out of Psalms and Deuteronomy about training up children and also spoke of mothers in the Old and New Testament that were godly women.

We enjoy attending Beaver Dam whenever we can...

Revival Services at Beech Valley

We attended revival services tonight at Beech Valley Church - Preacher Eric Proffit was holding the services...

He preached out of James 5 tonight and told some us about the trial he and his family went through after his daughter was saved...

The main focus of his message was James 5:13 - "Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray."

We're thankful for the opportunity to attend services where the Word of God is preached uncompromisingly.

Calvary Baptist and Martindale Church

We headed over to Fleetwood School Saturday, May 1st, to help out with a benefit singing for a family and felt honored to have been asked to sing...we played from 4pm until 430pm -

After we packed up, we drove over to Calvary Baptist Church in West Jefferson for their Sunday Night Singing Service - the folks at the church had fixed us refreshments in their fellowship hall, and we fellowshipped with them and enjoyed some good snacks and desserts...we all got to craving BBQ and ate out at Smoky Mountain BBQ, which was delicious, as always!

Sunday, we drove over to Johnson City and had service with the folks at Martindale Baptist Church - this was one of the first churches that Blake played with us at when he started with SA two years ago...

Ate out at Fatz restaurant and laughed and cut-up, as usual :)

Gary is going to be playing some limited dates with SA the rest of 2010...he's taking some time off the rest of the time - keep him in your prayers - he's ok, just needing some rest....

In the meanwhile, our friend, Leonard Arnold filled in with us this weekend - he plays with the group, New Covenant, with his wife Lesa and a friend of theirs, Johnny Norris. Leonard is a dedicated and committed musician and Christian, and we enjoyed spending time with him and his family this weekend.

Blake stepped in on the banjo this weekend for SA and left us all very impressed with his progress - you all know that he does great on the mandolin, and he does equally well on the banjo - he played my Gold Tone banjo this weekend :)

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church

We attended services at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church this evening...

The boys' cousins came with their mom and dad - it was good to see all of them! I've even had a baby chicken named after me by my little 4-year-old cousin. And, that is quite an honor :)

We played an instrumental in memory of Boyd McCloud, "Sweet By and By" ---- he was one of the first folks to ask Southern Accent to come to their church and sing (Fall Creek Church) and had supported our group ever since...

After the services, we went out to eat with everyone, cousins too, and had a great time of fellowship.

Continue to keep Southern Accent and other unspoken prayer requests in your prayers. We appreciate it!!

South Fork Baptist and Beech Valley Baptist

First full weekend of singing this year started off with South Fork Baptist Church in Todd - we got there a little early and the boys were able to go to the caboose that sits in a grassy lot right next to where the church is - they always enjoy climbing on the caboose :)

The Norris Family sang a few songs while we took a short break - we always enjoy hearing them - they have such a sweet spirit about them and we enjoy the fellowship!

During the first few minutes of our singing, a man came in the church carrying a guitar and sat down on the back pew along with his wife. We noticed that he seemed to be enjoying the music...we took a break, the Norris family got up to sing a few, then we closed out the service. When we got ready to set down our instruments, Mr. Norris said that the fella in the back pew was wanting to pick a few with us. The man explained that he was supposed to be playing out at the Todd Store that night, but he must have gotten mixed up on the date that he should have been there because there was not any music going on there that night. He said that he saw all of the cars at the church and thought he'd stop in and see what was going on and went ahead and brought his guitar in when he came in.

He got up with us and stated that he normally doesn't play a lot of "religious songs," but that he knew a few and appreicated the opportunity to sing for the church. He played his guitar - kind of a bluesy style - and sang 3 songs with us - he was a really good musician and we had a great time...

At the end of the service, while we were packing up our equipment and instruments, Mrs. Norris said that the man that played guitar with us had gave her a donation to give to us and he hoped that it blessed us and that he had left quickly. No one at the church had ever seen the fella before and he left so quickly that we were unable to thank him for his generosity.

On Sunday, we attended Beech Valley Church's welcome service for their new pastor, Josh Hayes, and his wife and son...they seemed to have really pulled off keeping the service secret because I spoke with his wife during the lunch after the service, and she said that when they pulled into the parking lot at the church, Pastor Josh said, "They've planned something without me!" The groups that sang were Southern Accent, The Dollar Brothers, and Gaining Ground. Pastor Josh delivered a message about Jonah and Ninevah, then we had lunch...

Next week, we'll be at Pleasant Hill on Sunday for an evening singing service.

Meadowview Church

We've been attending Meadowview Church for the past couple of years on the 3rd or 4th Sunday in March to help celebrate Preacher Richard Jones' birthday, and we enjoyed being back this year too!

We got there early to set up our sound system and then attended Sunday School - we always enjoy JR Bunton's teaching...the boys went to a class too and their teacher is so sweet!

We sang for about 30 minutes or so and then Preacher Richard preached - He used Psalm 11:3 for his text and the message was great - he pointed out that even though Christ is our Foundation, we build upon that foundation by studying the Bible, etc...I'd never heard it put this way, but you know, it makes sense and calls us to be responsible for what we do after salvation.

After the message, we all went out to the Fellowship Hall for some KILLER lunch! Those folks can COOK - woo-hoo!!!!!! We ate ourselves into oblivion and then went and got our stuff packed back up.

Thanks to all at Meadowview for always giving us such a good time in the Lord at your church...we love y'all

I'm baaaaaack!

Hi! Yes, no posts for quite a while - I have GOOD intentions, but sometimes that isn't enough!!

Southern Accent had some great church services, attended some fun festivals, and lots of other stuff in 2009!

Since September, we've been to Emerald Isle, NC (Oct) and Perry, FL (Jan 2010) for some weekend trips and then some of our local/regional churches.

We're still having the Jam at Middle Fork Baptist Church on Bishops Ridge Pkwy in Blowing Rock - near Tweetsie Railroad - the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month at 7pm - there is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated. The ladies organize the food/drinks for the evening and then there is music until 930pm or 10pm - all are welcome!

Let's see..............we took the winter 'off' so to speak since it's hard to travel in 'wintry conditions.' Good thing, too, since this winter was, well, wintry :)

But, we sang at St. Luke's Episcopal for our Blue Ridge Sunday Night Concert Series #2 on Valentine's Day and then we were at Altamont Methodist Church March 13th for a community singing...

We'll be heading out to Meadowview Baptist Church on Sunday, March 28th, at 10am for Sunday School and then singing during the worship hour...this is an annual event, as the church celebrate's Preacher Richard Jones' birthday...we look forward every year to getting to fellowship with them and then to eat that great country cooking they have afterwards ;)

Weekly Update - Rough Ridge, New River Baptist, Elk Park Christian

September 19th - We sang at the Rough Ridge Bluegrass Festival, which was also a fundraiser for We Can through the Hospitality House. The crowd was down because of the constant rain, but we all had a good time regardless. Great BBQ and great Chicago-style hotdogs were served and we certainly didn't go hungry :)

September 20th - We headed over to the edge of Ashe County and near the VA line to sing at New River Baptist Church for their homecoming services. I forgot to pack an important piece of sound equipment, but all went well since we just patched into the church's sound system. The devil tried to make it a bad morning, but didn't succeed! We ate lunch with the church afterwards and enjoyed visiting with the congregation.

September 22nd - We sang at the revival services at Elk Park Christian Church in Elk Park, NC. Two of the Melody Trio were there and sang great - they have a great spirit about them and are very encouraging of other singers. The preacher delivered a very thought-provoking message...We appreciate the hospitiality and the welcome we received.

Weekly Update - Mountain Music Jamboree and Zionville Revival

September 12th - We sang over at the Mountain Music Jamboree in West Jefferson. That Arvill Scott is a hoot, and my boys loved dressing up in all of his costumes and clowning around...We played 2 one-hour sets and there was some great dancing there on the instrumentals and ballads. September 15th - We sang at the revival services for Zionville Baptist Church. Preacher Delmar James preached and delivered a great message on not judging others. Whew. We are thankful for preachers like him and Preacher Carl that deliver the message straight from The Book.

Weekly Update - Jones House and Avery County Fair

September 4th - We sang at the Bluegrass Blowout at the Jones House in Boone. This was a Labor Day celebration. Three other groups sang that afternoon and the evening was very enjoyable. The rain came for a while, but then let up, and there was just a nice cool breeze the rest of the evening.

September 9th - We sang at the Avery County Fair in Newland. Pureheart sang before us, and we enjoyed getting to listen to them, too! Some of us walked around and went and visited the animals and the petting zoo. The goats (and all of the baby animals) were adorable :)

TOTALLY BELATED UPDATES :) for August 2009

AUGUST 26TH WAS GARY TRIVETTE'S BIRTHDAY - HE IS NOW 48 YEARS OLD...SO, THE NEXT TIME THAT YOU SEE HIM, RIB HIM ABOUT THAT A LITTLE :) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TRIV.

August 1st - We traveled to Bristol, VA, and sang for the benefit for the Mountain Empire Baptist School. It was an outdoor event and the ground was pretty soggy where the rain had been coming down for about 2-3 days straight, but we had a great time. Barry Scott (formerly of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver) was there with his band, Second Wind. There were about 3 other groups there singing, as well. Great BBQ, too!!!

August 2nd - We sang at Proffit's Grove Baptist Church in Meat Camp, NC - they were having a blood drive there that afternoon, and when we got there, Preacher Delmar and another gentlemen were resting on the pews. We didn't know they were in there, so we came busting through the door, joking and laughing, and woke them up. I don't think Preacher Delmar felt too good after giving blood, but a good dose of bluegrass gospel cheered him up.

August 9th - We headed down to Wilkesboro to Second Baptist Church for Sunday night services. We'd never sang at this church before, but some of the folks knew us from our singing at the Hometown Opry there in Wilkesboro.

August 22nd - We were at Henson's Chapel there in the Cove Creek community for a singing with some other groups. That is a beautiful church and the members are so nice - there was a bat that got in thru the open doors and flew around for quite a while but eventually got trapped in one of the Sunday School rooms. Then, a skunk omitted its odor, too - interesting evening!

August 23rd - We sang at Fall Creek Baptist Church just up the road from where we live. Good crowd there that night and got to see a lot of Blake's family, too :)

August 29th - We headed over to Crossnore Baptist Church to help with a benefit for coalminers in West Virginia. The folks were raising money to get them some gifts for Christmas and also some food, etc. If anyone would like to contribute with goods or financially, contact one of us in Southern Accent and we'll put you in touch with the appropriate contacts.

August 30th - We sang at the morning service at Mount Paddy Church in Jefferson, NC. After church, there was a meal downstairs, and we enjoyed talking with the congregatio over some great lunch!!!

TOTALLY BELATED UPDATES :) for July 2009

Obviously, craziness has reigned since I have not blogged since July 1st! I am aghast!!!!!

Anyhoo...

July 4th - Christmas in July in West Jefferson - we played at 9am that morning, but there was actually quite a large crowd...I was able to find Whitney some gorgeous earrings among the vendors there for her birthday :)

Later that day, we joined others at Bethel Ballfield for the Bethel Blast hosted by Bethel Baptist Church...surely, the attendance must grow every year, as there was at least a couple hundred more folks there this year than last. Great food, music, fellowship, and fireworks!

July 10th - We played at the Music Fest 'n Sugar Grove - a pretty good-sized crowd was there on that Friday...

July 25th - We played two sets at the High Country Bluegrass Festival (11am and 4pm). The weather was pretty nice, not too hot for this time of year. The guys had stayed the night before in the RV and had picked until pretty late. We set up a couple of shelters and sat under them during the other performances and stayed pretty comfortable...

July 26th - We sang at Beech Valley Baptist Church's homecoming services. As usual, the ladies had fixed a delicious lunch afterwards and we totally stuffed ourselves :)

July 31st - We were at Middle Fork Baptist Church for our CD release concert. Our friend, John Cockman, sat in with us on the fiddle. Earl May sang his bass vocal on "Camping in Canaan's Land." The sanctuary was full and after the concert, most went over to the fellowship hall for the Jam.

Newest SA Member - Andy Trivette

Connie and Gary's brother, Andy Trivette, has joined Southern Accent on a part-time basis. He is going to play the resophonic guitar (TIFKAD) for us and we're pretty excited. He's a great musician and a dedicated Christian, father, and husband.

Andy started playing music around the age of 8. His first instrument was the bass, then he moved on to the guitar. Since that time, he has learned all of the bluegrass instruments.

"I spent many years playing for wordly glorification but when I asked Jesus to come in and save me, my whole life changed. I looked at the world and its views different. There is no greater feeling than using your talent for the Lord and winning lost souls to Christ."

Andy will add a lot to Southern Accent musically and personally...

On Father's Day, we sang at Zionville Baptist for their Father's / Mother's Day service. The lunch was catered by Dan'l Boone Inn and was, as usual, delicious!

Tuesday, June 23rd, Gary went over to Hugh's and picked up our new CDs which had arrived that afternoon. We were all excited that they had arrived!! They look great! Friday, June 26th (also Whitney's birthday!), we traveled over to Ashe County and played at the Backstreet Concert Series. There was a pretty large crowd and the pavilion had just been built not long ago for the bands. The weather was great, and the kids had a great time going to the park to play with our friends Jennifer, Laurien, and Arwen Cockman. John Cockman played the fiddle with us that evening, and we sure enjoyed spending time with him and his family. Had supper at Prime Sirloin with the Cockmans and also Hugh and his wife, Marilyn.

Saturday, we sang at God's House of Worship in Banner Elk and enjoyed spending time with the congregation there...

Sunday, we headed out to Henson's Creek Baptist Church in Newland. After the service, we went out to the fellowship hall where the church had some supper waiting in celebration of all who had birthdays in June...good food and great fellowship!

SA NY trip Part 2

PART 2 (as written in Sue Trivette's journal):

Saturday morning, June 13th, we were up early so we could get to the festival grounds and the band could set up. Everyone there was so nice and friendly, we felt right at home. We worried that the northern folks might not like bluegrass gospel, but everyone, especially the preacher, seemed to really enjoy it. We were there most of the day and played two full sets and a closing set. We met so many folks from many different places. Pastor David Hayes sang a couple songs with SA that afternoon. The church served close to 800 chicken dinners that day and actually had to turn away several people due to running out of food. SA had an artist do a caricature of them, as did Sue Trivette and Daniel Vance...

Sunday, we went to Barker Assembly of God Church and once again the preacher and other folks of the church welcomed us and had everything ready for the band to set up. The church was praising God and clapping their hands during the SA singing. The preacher got up afterwards and said a few words and then had an altar call for anyone with a burden who wanted to be anointed with oil and have the laying on of hands during prayer. Almost everyone in the church went forward. It was a different type of service than I (Sue) had ever seen, but I felt lead to go forward and let the group pray for my heart condition. God's Word says that where two or three are gathered together in His name, He will be there among us. I felt His presence that morning in the service.

A love offering was taken up for the band and we felt so blessed at the enormous generosity of the small church.

The rest of Sunday was spent at Leila and John's. We had a cookout of hamburgers and hotdogs cooked on the grill by John, and Leila made Beef-on-Weck, which was new dish for us but very delicious! We set up chairs and tables in their backyard and ate 'til we were stuffed. A game called Ladderball was set up by Karrie (Paulette's niece) and most everyone tried their luck at it. Then somehow what started with a few pieces of ice down someone's shirt ended in a major water fight and no one was spared (not even Paulette's brother, Dallas). We had so much fun and laughed so hard and were all soaked from head to toe. We only stopped when we were too exhausted to continue :) After we went in and changed clothes and go somewhat dry, we ordered some delicious NY pizza and wings from Wilson's Pizza. We decided to get to bed early so that we could start back to NC early Monday morning.

Next day, Monday, June 15th, we got started early as planned and were settled in for a long ride. We were near Prospect, PA, on I-79 going approximately 60mph when we had a blowout on one of the front tires. No one was exactly sure what happened, we just knew it was bad when we heard a LOUD bang. But, thanks to God's amazing grace and the expert skills of our driver, Daniel Vance, we got off the road safely and no one was hurt, just scared, but thankful. The men in our group got the tire changed while Connie and Paulette warmed up some spaghetti for all to have for lunch. We stopped at Indian Brave Campground, which was just a couple miles from where we changed the tire for a spare, and they directed us to Hufnagel and Majors Trailer Sales in hopes that they could get us a new tire. The folks at the Trailer Sales store gave us directions to Skander Tire in Evans City, PA. They took us right in and put on 2 new tires on the front and rotated the back tires around for us and had us back on the road in no time. Once again, God was with us and we felt so blessed. Blake led us in a prayer of thanksgiving giving God the praise and honor for protecting us and giving us a way out of the situation.

Because of the previous problem with the headlights, we knew that we couldn't drive at night, and it was getting late, so we looked in our RV book and called for the nearest campground. We found one a short distance away called the Broken Wheel Campground in WVa. Once again, the folks were friendly and we got settled in for the night. We built a fire and roasted marshmallows and the kids (Josh and Daniel) played along the small stream in back of our site. The band sat around the campfire and played their bluegrass gospel music and soon we had a couple walking down the road to join us and listen for a while. And even the owner of the campground came by to listen and they all bought some CDs. He also said he would like to book SA to play in their pavillion area of the campground. We felt there must be a reason God guided us to this place, and we hope the CDs purchased will be a witness to everyone that hears them.

We settled down for the night in the RV - piled in rather tight, but we managed :) Next morning, Tuesday, we cooked scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast for breakfast (yum-o) then loaded everyting up and continued on towards home. We stopped in Abingdon, VA, and ate at Cracker Barrell (double yum-o) and then made it back to the Isaacs' home around 3:30pm.

Well, there you have it! That was a brief synopsis of our NY trip :)

Thursday, JUne 11th, 2009, Southern Accent and friends left in our RV for Barker, NY, from Beech Creek, NC. We were all excited and eager to reach our destination. Most of us had never seen Niagra Falls and were anxious to see it for the first time. However, the main reason for this trip was for SA to sing at Chiavetta's Chicken BBQ sponsored by Barker Assembly of God Church on the grounds of their future new church.

The trip was long and tiring. It was around 10:30pm when we reached Leila and John Klos' home (sister to Paulette). We had to drive in heavy rain a lot of the way and when we got into the community where Paulette's sister lived, our headlights begain to go on and off. We were frightened and did a lot of praying, but God guided us to our destination safely.

Leila and John were so nice and welcomed us with open arms. We got unpacked and spent a little time getting acquainted and of coursed we teased each other about our different accents. We even tried to teach their African Gray Parrot, Tyrone, to say "Dawg" (dog) and other mountain slang. We hope he will eventually say some of them. :)

The next morning the rain had stopped and the sun was shining and we went to breakfast at the Cup and Saucer restaurant in Gasport, NY. The owner, Dana, was so nice and saw we got our food as quickly as possible. We met with Rev. David Hayes of the Barker Assembly of God Church. He also gave us a warm weldome and went over the details for the next day's chicken BBQ. We all were excited about meeting people of the community and hopeful that our songs would be a witness to some lost soul.

While at the restaurant, we discovered a monster with a green face and a cape which Daniel (little Daniel) and Josh had to check out. However, when one of the guys plugged up the monster and he began to move his head, little Daniel ran and hid his face and refused to look at it again :)

The rest of the day we spent siteseeing with Leila, John, their daughter April and her family. First, we went to what is called the locks in Lockport, NY, which are part of the Erie Canal. It's a place where boats can be lifted or lowered to different levels of water to go up- or downstream. We visited the museum there and read about the history of the area and the locks.

From there, we went to the shores of Lake Ontario. The water is a beautiful blue and so wide we couldn't see the other side, so we felt as though we were looking at the ocean. On a clear day, you can see Canada. (We did see the faintest outline of Canada and Toronto).

We took a tour of the old lighthouse called Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse in Barker, NY, at the Golden Hill State Park. We learned more history of the area, and the lighthouse was built in 1875 at a cost of $90K. The living quarters are preserved in their original state. We climed to the top of the lighthouse, and the view was great!

The next stop was a the Harbor Village at Olcott Beach, NY, which is a beautiful, shady spot with small gift shops and walkways along the waterfront (this also is at Lake Ontario). We took a break and had some icecream and browsed the shops.

We ate lunch at a small curb service restaurant called Reids. We were told by Leila and John what great hamburgers and hotdogs they have. We went up to the counter and ordered our burgers and hotdogs, and when we asked for lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo, we were told they didn't have those items. (Sue) - I'm thinking, what kind of place is this, but we all ate our food with mustard and ketchup, which was all they had on the counter to use. (Paulette) - Despite just the mustard and ketchup, it was pretty darn good food and burgers were only like a buck each :) Later, we found out from Leila and John that we were supposed to ask for Reids Sauce on our burgers, which is what makes them so famous in the area. But, Leila forgot to tell us that :)

After lunch, we headed up to Niagra Falls. (Sue) - I had been looking forward to this for a long time, but never thought I would get the opportunity to visit, but thanks to SA's generosity, I was there and I was spellbound by the beauty. The amount of water and the force at which it fell from the rocks makes a fine mist that rises up from the bottom of the horseshoe shape of the falls. While part of the group walked down to see about taking a boat ride, Connie and I went to the gift shop for souveniers. We met back at the falls and some wanted to go back and ride the Maid of the Mist, but by the time they got there, it was closed for the day :( But we enjoyed ourselves anyways. I felt as if I could stay for hours and watch the water...

Belated Update - New York, Relay, etc...

Time sure flies by quickly! I was checking out my other posts and realized it has been FOREVER since I've posted last...sorry!!!

We left for our SA trip to western NY on Thursday, June 11th, around 9am and had a great trip, a great visit, and just fun being together...I will post a separate blog about the trip to fill you all in on the details :)

We played at the Watauga County Relay for Life on Friday, June 19th...It had special meaning to all of us, as Connie is a cancer survivor (going on 2-1/2 years), my dad, cousin, and brother-in-law passed away with cancer, and Blake's papa passed away in May of this year with cancer...

Seeing all of the luminaries lit up in honor and memory of those touched by cancer was breathtaking, to say the least...

We're off to Zionville Baptist Church Sunday, June 21st, for their Father's Day service and a lunch catered by Dan'l Boone Inn (did I say yum-o?)!

We are just days away from receiving our CDs in the mail...We are all very excited to have them out there and will be planning a CD release party in the near future :)

We were back at The Jam Friday, June 5th, at Middlefork and were pleased to see the huge crowd there! A lot of jamming went on and some shinanigans by Arvill Scott (check out www.mountainmusicjamboree.com) :)

Saturday, we were off to Shirley's Restaurant to sing for a couple hours after stuffing ourselves silly with the delicious vittles served there - if you've never been, you're really missing out on some good home cooking (check out www.shirleyshomecooking.com)

Sunday, we joined our friend, Hugh Sturgill, at Blackburns Chapel United Methodist Church and sang during their morning service.

After grabbing a bite to eat after Blackburns, we headed off to the gospel singing at Trade Mill in Trade, TN...large crowd and lots of wonderful fellowship...

This update is in memory of Blake's papa, Bill Vance, who passed away Saturday, May 16th, 2009...

Bill Vance

Bill Lawrence Vance, age 71, of Newland passed away on Saturday May 16, 2009 while at his residence.

He was born a son of the late Blake and Eva Wise Vance.

Bill was a member of Big Meadows Baptist Church.

He enjoyed hunting, farming and trading and loved being with his family.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by; brothers, Duton, Luther and Stokes Vance; sisters, Aster Webb and Oralee Henderson.

Left to carry on his memory are; his wife, Patsy Daniels Vance of the home; son, William Daniel Vance and wife Amanda of Crossnore; daughter, Susan Webb and husband Junior also of Crossnore; brothers, A.B Vance and Buddy Vance both of Crossnore; sisters, Eva Jo Townsend of Crossnore, Betty Draughn of Banner Elk and Ona Buchanan of Newland; six grandchildren, Blake, Laura, Lindsey, Kiley, Madison and Morgan; and one great grandchild, Tessa.

Graveside services for Mr. Vance were held on Wednesday May 20th at 10:00 a.m. in the Clark Cemetery. Rev. Earl Carver, Jr., Rev. Wesley Duncan, Rev. Marty Branton and Rev. Harry Lee Turbyfill officiated. The family received friends on Tuesday May 19th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Crossnore Baptist Church.

Belated Updates :)

So sorry for the belated updates on our blog...been busy, busy, busy and just forgot ;)

Dennis and I went down to Denton for the Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver festival for a few days on Mother's Day weekend...Blake and Whit joined us Friday and we all had a great time. Did a little jamming with some friends from Boone and also Barry Scott's dobro player...

We got to see a lot of groups that I hadn't seen live before like: IIIrd Tyme Out, Barry Scott & Second Wind, Dale Ann Bradley, Heather Berry, etc...Doyle has really gotten his group back on track, and they sound great! They'll be at the High Country Bluegrass Festival at the Boone Fairgrounds on Sat., July 25th - (we will too!)

On Mother's Day, Southern Accent sang at Gary's Church, Beaver Dam. Great service and the moms received a beautiful carnation :)

We practiced Tuesday at Middlefork Church with Connie and Gary's brother, Andy Trivette. Andy plays with the group Crossties out of Caldwell County, NC. He's a great musician and we appreciate him helping us out when we're in need...

Friday night we sang a couple songs at the Relay for Life benefit at Cove Creek Elementary School's talent show and then briskly got to work setting up for our Fellowship Celebration. Lots of preliminary work to take care of before the main event day, but after doing this for 8 years, we pretty much have it down pat. Thankfully, a lot of the chairs were already set out for the talent show at the school, so that cut down on a lot of time!

Saturday, we all got to the school around 8ish (in the morning) and finished up on the setup and final preps for the start time, which was 10am. We had a whole day of music, lunch, supper, and lots of fellowship (which is what it's all about!). Our volunteers kept the ball rolling with setting up, cleaning up, serving food, cooking food, etc., etc., etc! Our love and appreciation for all of them goes beyond words! Greg Reece and Lee Hodges with Blue Country donated their time and the use of their sound system for the entire day...Hugh Sturgill went all the way back to his home in Boone and ran off some of our songs and brought them back so that folks could hear some of our new songs off of our new CD...Thanks to the ladies from the school for opening the school and helping with the cleanup...Thanks to all of the groups that played: The Dishman Family, The Harmon Family, Crossties, Naomi and the Homefolks, Familiar Ground, Gaining Ground, and Leftover Bluegrass...Thanks to Pepsi for the donation of drinks...Thanks to everyone that stayed after the talent show on Friday to help us set up and to everyone who stayed after our Fellowship Celebration to help with the cleanup...Thanks for the donations that will help us with the cost of next year's Celebration...I'm sure I've unintentionally left someone out, but thanks, thanks, thanks to EVERYONE who had a part in Saturday's success...and to the little girl that loves our music, got our autographs, and is as cute as a button - we love you!!!

Even though the weekend was fun, there was a bit of sadness that went along with it because Blake's papa, Bill Vance, passed away Saturday evening. Blake called and said that he appreciated all the prayers that went up for his family and that he loves everyone very much! The visitation for the family will be at Crossnore Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 19th, starting at 6pm and going until 8pm. The graveside service will be Wednesday, May 20th, at 10am. If you'd like to send flowers, ask for them to be sent to Crossnore Baptist Church for the Bill Vance service.

Thanks to everyone for everything they've done to help out the Vance Family.

Weekly Update - New Harvest, Southside, etc.

We made a short trip over to Johnson City, TN, this past Sat., May 2nd, to New Harvest Church. We enjoyed being with preacher James Taylor and his congregation.

Sunday, we joined the folks at Southside Church in Mtn. City, TN, for a Sunday evening singing service. Thanks so much to preacher Gary and his family and to Leonard & Lisa Arnold for the invitation.

This is the first weekend that we've traveled in our RV that we purchased last December (2008). As Blake said, it's a very relaxing and comfortable ride, and it'll spoil us a little compared to traveling in the van :) Dennis and Blake took turns doing the driving this weekend and we're thankful for the safe travels...We're very blessed to have it and are looking forward to doing a little more extensive travel this summer and fall. Oh, ask us sometime about tearing down a phone line :)

We practiced Tues., May 5th, at Gary's shop. Blake brought his friend Lewis Taylor with him, who sat in our picking...Thanks to Whit for getting the boys some stuff at the store :)...Practice is really enjoyable and is a great time to relax and work on some songs that everyone brings for the group to work up.

Gary, Blake and Dennis went afterwards to put a sign advertising our Fellowship Celebration - don't forget that's coming up Sat., May 16th!!! The schedule may be seen at www.southernaccent.us and click on the Celebration link.

We're scheduled to be at Gary's Church, Beaver Dam Baptist, this coming Sunday for Mother's Day...We're wishing all of the mommies out there a blessed Mother's Day :) I'm personally thankful to have 2 precious children and 2 gorgeous stepdaughters that I love dearly and cherish deeply. Weekly Update - Cranberry, Pleasant Hill, CD, Jam, Fellowship Celebration

We were spending the weekend singing in Avery County on April 25th and 26th...

Cranberry Baptist Church hosted us on Saturday and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Sunday.

I was thinking the other day about how much we appreciate folks taking their time on the weekends to come out and listen to gospel music. It's a testament of their dedication to their church, to the need for fellowship, and to the desire to hear God's word in song. We want everyone to know that we don't take it lightly that they are spending their time with us :)

As promised, here's a little bit more information on our CD. The title is, "Songs of Faith, Love & Life." This recording is a little different form our other recordings, in that we included some secular songs that are some of our favorites and most requested at festivals and non-gospel events. This does not change our commitment to spread God’s word through our music. We sincerely hope this recording will be used to further the cause of Christ and reach even more people for Him.

Please plan to attend The Jam at Middlefork Baptist Church this Friday, May 1st. It'll start at 7pm and go until ????? The church is on Bishops Ridge Pkwy (right before you get to Tweetsie, coming from Boone). No admission charge - donations appreciated.

All are also invited to Southern Accent's 8th Annual Fellowship Celebration on Sat., May 16th. The event starts at 10am and goes until 9pm. We'll be serving lunch and supper. Weekly Update - Jam, South Fork, Charity Mission

The Jam went really well for its first night at Middlefork Church Friday, April 17th! The turn-out was great with several new folks attending. It was nice to see the guys that we met in Wilkesboro come up our way and jam for a long time with us...The fellowship hall at the church can seat up to about 140 and we were very close to that number - on the first night :) We'll be at it again Friday, May 6th, at 7pm.

On Sat., April 18th, we were at South Fork in Todd. Always great to hear The Norris Family sing - we especially enjoyed "I'll Live Again" that they sang :) Thanks to Linda Norris for the invitation!

Sunday, we attended Charity Missio in Nebo, NC (near Marion). We attended Sunday School with them and then sang during the 11:00am hour. Thanks to Carolyn Gaddy for the invitation!

I met with the graphics guy for our CD this evening. We're looking forward to seeing his work...Thanks to Hugh & Marilyn for the use of their home during the meeting.

I had a chance to listen to all of the songs on Hugh's system tonight, too, and can't wait to get the project out!!! We've got a lot of top-notch people bringing everything together for us - we'll do a special blog about them and their history in music nearer the time that the CD comes out...

Please continue to remember Blake's papa during his battle with cancer. And, don't forget his wife and family. I know from past experience with cancer with my dad, John Johnson, that this is a rough time for them. Their faith is strong, though, but they do request prayers from their brothers and sisters in Christ.

Weekly Update - Easter, CD progress

We trust that everyone had a blessed Easter... I was commenting to several friends last week that after watching The Passion of the Christ a few years back, I have always felt like I should make it a point to do so every year. But, you know, I just can't seem to. I know that the human mind could never fully comprehend the suffering Christ endured, but the depiction of it in that film had to be so close. Folks, Jesus willingly took that upon Himself...

Southern Accent had the weekend off from singing over Easter but still, a lot was accomplished :)
On Friday, we had pictures taken at the Jones House by our friend, Cliff Waters. The staff at the Jones House were very accomodating and gracious hosts. The pictures turned out so good, and we can't wait to share them with ya...

We're closing in on getting our CD sent out for replication. The title we've chosen will reflect the songs that are on it, and a lot of careful consideration went into the choosing of each of the songs (there are 15). Hugh Sturgill has lent his expertise and incredible knowledge of recording, mixing, and the intricacies of all levels of the process to this project, and we'll be forever grateful...

Please don't forget that The Jam is going to be held at Middlefork Baptist Church on Bishops Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock (right before you get to Tweetsie, coming from Boone) on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. Starts at 7pm and goes until ???????? There will be refreshments available and several rooms to jam in. Southern Accent will not be changing our commitment to those who attend The Jam - we are about making everyone feel welcome, included, and appreciated. Again, this is the perfect opportunity for musicians just getting started to come and learn from more experienced musicians and to genuinely feel a part of the group. Thanks to John Tester for his interest in Southern Accent co-hosting The Jam :)

We're about a month away from our 8th Annual Fellowship Celebration! It'll be Sat., May 16th (Dennis' birthday - 52nd!), starting at 10am at the Cove Creek Elementary School on Vanderpool Road in Watauga County. We'll be serving lunch and supper this year. Update - Pictures, CD, etc.

Southern Accent went to the Jones House in Boone today (Fri., Apr. 10th) and had some pictures made for our CD cover, booklet, etc...We're excited about seeing them and how they turned out. The Jones House is a really cool place - it was built in 1908!

We're in the last stages of our CD now - yay! It sounds SO good...yay! We'll be filling you in with more information within the next week or so :) Hugh, you rock, man!!!

A reminder that The Jam is going to start being held at Middle Fork Baptist Church's fellowship hall with an all-gospel jam in the sanctuary. This is going to be a great opportunity to get more folks involved with even bigger future plans in the works ;)

Weekly Update - Prayer Request, Jam, Belle Meadows

First off, please keep in your prayers Blake and his family. He has an immediate family member that is going through medical issues right now and needs the prayers of Christian brothers and sisters...

Please make a point of being at The Jam this Friday starting at 6:30pm. We have some information that we'd like to share with everyone - nothing bad :) We're seeing prayers answered and we want to share it with y'all...

Visited Belle Meadows Church in Bristol, VA, last Tuesday, March 24th, for their conference on supporting Israel and her people. The website to check out for the mission is www.hopeofisrael.com - they provide Hebrew/English New Testaments to the Jews and witness to them of Jesus Christ. Thanks to Joshua and Daniel's sister, Mimi, and to Pete (Peep) for taking the boys to eat and play. They enjoyed spending time with y'all...love ya!

It's unreal that the end of March is upon us! We're looking forward to the coming months being out singing and picking. And, Easter is just 2 weeks away!!!!

Weekly Update - Arbordale & Meadowview

First off, I need to update everyone on our Jam:

We'll be moving the time to 6:30pm with the ending time being around 9pm. It's still on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month at the Western Watauga Community Center. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated to help keep snacks and drinks available. There are 3 rooms to pick/sing in at the Center. We were at Arbordale Presbyterian on Sat., March 21st. Had a great time, as usual. We know several folks there, and thanks to Kevin Aldridge for opening the church early for us. Connie and Gary's YOUNGER sister, Liz Hayes, sang 3 songs with us - "Gone," "Blessed Redeemer," and "Palm of His Hand." She has a beautiful voice, and we enjoyed spending that time with her...

Sunday, March 22nd, we attended Meadowview Baptist in TN for Preacher Richard Jones' birthday service. J.R., the Sunday School teacher, did a great job on the lesson :) After the service, we went and ate until we all about popped in the fellowship hall. Those ladies can sure cook!!! Kudos to whoever made the crab cakes :) They were delish! (along with EVERYTHING else)...

Our recording is in some of its final stages now. I think that all of our part is done and Hugh is going to do the mixing. We'll have a few guest musicians on this one...

Weekly Update - Benefit and Jam

We attended and sang at the benefit for the niece of our good friend, Tommy Harmon. Felicia Perry had had a stroke on Valentine's Day and has been in Winston since. The benefit supper and singing for her family was Sat., March 14th. The turnout was great. They raised well over $5000.00. During the auction, Dennis landed 2 golf passes (thanks to moi!) and a Case t-shirt. Gary bought Daniel a planter that looks like a little bench - thanks, Unc! Daniel had been eyeing that planter all night long :)

The Jam is on for this coming Friday, March 20th. The musicians are really taking advantage of the 3 different rooms that we have to jam in - we encourage the listeners to make some rounds on the different rooms and hear some more great music!

This coming weekend, we'll be at Arbordale Presbyterian in Banner Elk on Sat., March 21st - our friends, Kevin Aldridge and his family, and then Gary and Connie's sister Liz and her family attend here. Liz is scheduled to sing a few with us - we enjoy spending that time together with her!

And then we're at Meadowview Baptist in TN on Sun., March 22nd for Preacher Richard's birthday celebration. We've attended Meadowview every year for his birthday going on____ --- well, I actually don't know how many years it's been! We always have fun, though, and thoroughly enjoy the meal in the fellowship hall afterwards :o)

Weekly Update - Zionhill, etc.

Had a great time at Zionhill Church on Sun., March 8th. Gary still had the crud but was able to sing some harmony, so Connie and I did the lead singing for the evening. Connie and Gary's cousin, Gerald, sang "Beautiful Altar of Prayer" and played bass on that and also on "Bells of St. Mary's." He's a great singer and musician.

Thanks to the preacher for stomping the life out of that wasp, too!

Practice Tuesday was fun, as usual. After dinner, we worked on some new material that Connie had written and a few others. Arrangement is one of the most enjoyable aspects of using originals by the group members. There's definitely a feeling of accomplishment and pride that goes into working up a song to fit the group. Whit, you looked so cute sacked out on the couch with Joshua and Daniel - luv ya!

We're looking forward to getting more done on the recording. I believe that Gary's going in Wednesday to tie up some loose ends, then Dennis is going to Hugh's Thursday. The song selection for this CD is something that we put a lot of thought into. I'll give you a run down soon of the songs and maybe give you a target date for it being out.

Good news! Curtis Main's son, Matt, is scheduled to be home this Friday!!! His recovery is going well, although there's still a long road ahead of him. Remember to keep including them in your prayers :)

Reminder that this Saturday is the benefit singing and supper for Donovan and Felicia Perry and their kids, Hope and Lee. It'll start at 4pm and go until around 8 or 830pm. Supper will be served until 7pm and is only $5/plate. There will be an auction, too. More information can be obtained through Patience Perry at 828-898-4117.

Two-week Update - Playing Catch-up

Gosh, I didn't realize how long it'd been since I'd last blogged! (2 weeks)...

The generous jam attendees contributed a little over $200.00 to Curtis Main and his family at the Jam on the 21st. Curtis' son, Matt, is improving little by little after his motorcycle accident on Feb. 13th. They were very appreciative of the donations, prayers, and concern.

The Jam has been going exceptionally well with an ever-growing crowd each time. The three rooms provided to jam in give everyone a chance to pick with lots of different people. This is a great learning experience for any of you just learning to play an instrument, so plan on attending sometime and you'll find a lot of great teachers willing to give newbies some tips, explanations, etc...

We do have snacks and drinks provided (even decaf coffee).

Tonight, March 6th, Gary had a touch of bronchitis or something like that and wasn't able to sing much. We missed hearing him and hope he feels better quickly (like, Sunday, because we have to sing at Zionhill!!!!!) LOL. A big shoutout to Arvill Scott and his crowd that came out tonight. Arvill owns and runs the Mountain Music Jamboree (www.mountainmusicjamboree.com) in West Jefferson. He's a great musician and entertainer, and Southern Accent is one of his biggest fans...seriously.

Blake did some mando work at Hugh's recently - go Blake-us!!! The recording is coming along very nicely and we are looking forward to getting it out there. Good luck to Blake, too, in starting his own business in Crossnore. More info later :)

Connie and I were asked by Sherrie Norris of the All About Women magazine to be in it for the March issue, "Music in the Mountains." The magazine is a tribute to women all across the High Country. We're in good company with the other lady musicians (past and present) in our area: Laura Kaufman, the Butterpats, Buna Hicks, Ora Watson, etc., etc. Thanks, Sherrie - love ya!

There's going to be a benefit singing and spaghetti supper at Fall Creek Fire Department, Station 2, on Sat., March 14th, starting at 4pm. This is for Felicia Perry and her family. She had a stroke (she's only 38 yrs old) on Feb. 14th. Her and her husband, Donovan, have 2 school-age children. The supper will be $5/plate and they are accepting additional donations, also. If there are any further questions you need answered, please contact Patience Perry at 898-4117. The fire department requests that any checks be made out to FCVFD Ladies Auxillary with Felicia Perry benefit being written in the for line.

Dennis, Gary, Blake, Whitney, Daniel (Blake's father), and I went and spent the weekend at SPBGMA this weekend in Nashville.

This is the first time that most of us have been, and we all really enjoyed ourselves.

Lots (did I say lots?) of picking in just about every corner, hall, nook, and cranny at the Sheraton Hotel - unbelievable.

Saw some familiar faces from our area and enjoyed hearing some informal picking by some of the full-time musicians in the genre.

Thanks to those that stayed with the kids - they really enjoyed spending time with you all! We missed them, but knew they were in good hands (and hearts!).

Gosh, it feels like forever since we were last at The Jam! January had 5 weeks in it, so we had a two-week span in between this time...

Deepest Sympathy - Darrell Greene

Darrell Greene from Sugar Grove Baptist Church in Tennessee passed away Thursday, Jan. 22nd. I (Paulette) attend church with his daughter and her husband, Lois and Kenny Greene.

The following is taken from the Hux-Lipford website:

"Darrell, J. Greene, age 81, of 1684 Draft Road, Butler, Tennessee passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Mountain Home VA Center following a brief illness. He was born March 14, 1927 in Bakersville, NC. Darrell was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church, Chairman of the Deacon Board, choir director, and he sang soprano for the Sugar Grove Quartet for 40 years. He was an Army veteran and retired from Burlington Industries in 1986. He was a farmer and loved gardening."

Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Mr. Greene's family.

Weekly Update - Jam, etc.

Well, due to the icy conditions this morning, I think almost every church in the surrounding counties was canceled. We were supposed to go to Blackburns Chapel, but...

Say a prayer for Blake - he fell Saturday (I think it was Saturday) and twisted his ankle pretty badly. I guess Whitney's gonna have to baby him a bit more than usual until it's healed! :)

We had a great jam on Friday, the 16th. Even though the weather was unbelievably COLD, a lot of folks came out. We continue to have more pickers and listeners every time. It's great that there are three rooms to jam in, too! That gives everyone a chance to pick with all of the different musicians that come out to the jam. (I forgot to bring my camera to the Jam, thus no pictures this week :( )

Thanks to the sweet lady that brought her coffee pot to make decaf in! Thanks to Doyle for bringing the sweets, too.

And I don't think that Joyce Waters attempted to put any Exlax in Gary's batch of brownies this time! Love ya, Joyce!

Just when we thought that Connie was one of the only songwriters in Southern Accent, Gary surprises us again with another new song that he wrote. He and Dennis played it at the end of the jam - good job, Triv! Now that the "creative juices" are flowing, I've been writing down some lyrics to songs that come to mind, and Blake also has some songs that he's writen over the years. Who knows, between all of us, we may come up with plenty to do an original CD in the near future!

It's a blessing and a privilege to sing with such talented and committed folks as those in SA. I'm not just sayin' that either. I mean it. When I have time to sit down and have some quiet time, my thoughts often go to how blessed we are as a group to have such a ministry. I pray we NEVER take it for granted.

Weekly Update - Recording & Such

This past Friday, Jan. 9th, Dennis and I headed to Hugh's House and continued on with some of the recording, and today, Tues. Jan. 13th, Gary went back over and worked for a little bit, too.

We're excited about the way the process is going...Hugh knows his stuff, that's fer sure!

This Sunday, Jan. 18th, we've been invited to sing at the historic Blackburns Chapel in Todd, NC. From what we understand, the acoustics in the place are unbelievable!

A reminder, too, that The Jam is going to be going on again this Friday, Jan. 16th, starting at 7:30pm...hope that you will take the time to come out as so many others are doing. It's been great right from the start and we're seeing more and more musicians and listeners come out each time we have it! We are included in the Traditional Artist Directory of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. "In this directory, you can learn about people in the North Carolina mountains who are master practitioners of many of the region's folk traditions. Artists are included in the Traditional Artist Directory based on their artistic excellence, authenticity, and significance as practitioners of their respective traditions. In the first phase of the directory's development, a team of researchers from the North Carolina Folklife Institute spent more than a year gathering information and recommendations throughout the region. They held community meetings, interviewed artists, collected work samples, and wrote nominations. All nominations were reviewed by a group of panelists who had expertise in the region's folk culture. Panelists included presenters, scholars, folklorists, and traditional artists. Weekly Update - New Year's Eve and Jam

New Year's Eve Service:

We had a really great time in the Lord at our church's Watchnight Service on New Year's Eve. There were 2 preachers there who delivered such great messages. Southern Accent, the Willow Valley Church Choir, a group from Mountain Dale Church, and Linda, Jimmy & Kathy from Willow Valley sang. Around 9:30pm, we went out to the Fellowship Hall and ate. Then, we all came back into the church to finish out the evening. We're thankful that we were able to bring in the New Year fellowshipping with brothers and sisters in Christ!

The Jam:
On Friday, Jan. 2nd, we all converged on the Western Watauga Community Center for our Jam. We had another big turn out, and the number of musicians increased! Who knows, we may outgrow the place very soon!

I'm really enjoying seeing folks having such a good time. There are 2-3 jams going at once, and I'm sure it's hard for the listeners to decide where they want to go! The cool thing is, you'll see many different configurations of musicians all throughout the night. Everyone has an equal part in making the evening happen. Thanks to everyone that comes early and stays late to help us set up and clean up - your generosity is greatly appreciated!!!

I've been wanting to learn to play the acoustic electric bass, and I had the chance to that night. Once I had a chance to work with it for a few minutes and figure out what I was doing, it was really enjoyable to play. Who knows, maybe Gary will "let" me play his at some of Southern Accent's singings?!

Recording Update Dec. 30th

Connie, Gary, and I went over to Hugh's House this evening (Tuesday) and got all of the harmony vocals done - they sound realllllllllllly good! It's cool to hear how we all sing together after being in a group together for about 16 years. We put A LOT of work, dedication, and commitment into what we do as a group, and when you're in the process of recording, you're able to sit back and really appreciate what all of the members bring to Southern Accent.

Hugh said something hilarious tonight about Dennis' guitar playing: he said that if Dennis really acknowledged how well he played that guitar, he'd be dangerous...LOL!

Hugh is very complimentary and supportive of Southern Accent and just "tells it like it is." We appreciate that honesty, and we appreciate his sincerity.

Connie and Gary really sing well together, and it's neat to hear the harmonies come together so tightly.

Kudos to Mr. Original Gyros for the de-lish pita pizzas!

2-Week Update - Recording

Blake popped over to Hugh's a week ago last Saturday, putting down some mandolin lead tracks.

Gary had went over to Hugh's a week ago and laid down some lead vocals and some acoustic electric bass on a few songs - three, I think...

Connie went this past Tuesday afternoon and laid down her lead vocal tracks. She said that it went very well, too!

It's all coming along nicely, and since we're taking the winter "off" on our schedule, it's allowed us to focus on the recording.

We are, however, scheduled to be at my church - Willow Valley Baptist - this New Year's Eve. The service starts at 7pm and will go until midnight.

Then, we'll be having The Bluegrass Jam on Friday, January 2nd, at the Western Watauga Community Center, starting at 7:30pm and going until 11pm.

Weekly Update-Recording and Banjo

Gosh, I'd almost forgotten that a week has went by since my last post on the blog!

I went to Hugh's House to record my lead vocals and bass tracks on Monday, Dec. 15th. The session went very well. I completed the lead vocal tracks on all of the songs I sing lead on and on the ones that I lead the choruses on, too.

Then, we moved on to the bass tracks. I cut 12 songs! It was very enjoyable and a non-stressful evening. Thanks to Marilyn for the use of your home! Hugh, you rock, man!

Today, Gary went to Hugh's and did his lead vocals and some acoustic electric bass work on three of the songs that we've chosen.

The process is coming along nicely and verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry smoothly!

As promised, here's some more information on the instrument Gary is purchasing...Our original banjo player, Ronnie Hicks, passed away a few years ago from cancer. We all remember him having one of the LOUDEST banjos (and heaviest in weight, too!) around. Well, it just so happens that one of my sisters is married to one of Ronnie's brothers. Gary is buying Ronnie's old Ome banjo from them to kind of keep it "in" Southern Accent. I'll get more information and a picture of the banjo and put it on the blog for all to read about and see.

We've got a watchnight service coming up at mine and Dennis' church, Willow Valley Baptist Church, on Wednesday, Dec. 31st. The service will start at 7pm and go to/after midnight. There will be a break around 9pm for refreshments. We've always enjoyed attending New Year's Eve services at churches and spending time together and fellowshipping with other believers...

We'll be resuming The Bluegrass Jam on Friday, January 2nd, at the Western Watauga Community Center in Cove Creek. The times are 7:30pm until 11pm. Mark 'er down!

Weekly Update - SA Christmas Dinner and Recording

Sunday, Dec. 7th, all of SA and friends and family got together at Dan'l Boone Inn for our Christmas lunch after church. The kids enjoyed opening their presents and couldn't wait to get home to play with them! Thanks to everyone for your gifts - they are much appreciated. Our friends and family included: Whitney, Tina, Blake's grandparents, my parents, Connie's son, Connie and Gary's sister Sue, Judy and her 2 lovely granddaughters, and my 2 boys. The food was very tasty and the service was great.

More news on our recording:
We were invited a few months back to do a few tracks at Hugh's House, and we accepted the invitation. Hugh wanted to lay a few songs down and see how it went. It went very well! Since everything was going so smoothly, we have decided to pursue doing our entire CD there. Hugh is very knowledgeable about recording, music, mixing, etc., and has really made the process enjoyable.

We have laid down the rhythm tracks for all of the songs - meaning, Dennis and Blake have put down rhythm guitar and the mando chop. We will start building the songs from there. The process that we're going to be using will be different than what we've done in the past, but it seems very sensible and do-able!

The other news about this particular recording is that we are going to have gospel and bluegrass on it. We do quite a few good bluegrass songs when we're singing at festivals and non-church events and thought that this would be an ideal project to put some of those songs on. We've batted around this idea for a while now and collectively decided to go with it.

I'll keep the title of the CD a "secret" for now, but it will describe what the songs of the project represent.

On another note (no pun intended), Gary is thinking about purchasing an instrument that has a lot of meaning to our group - more on that later...gotta keep you in suspense so that you'll keep comin' back to read our blog!!!!

All of us are getting some projects around our houses done and other things while we're having some time "off" during the winter months. It's nice to spend some extra time with family and plan stuff with friends. Although, I will say that doing this recording and having our jam is giving us some music so that we're not going thru withdrawl :)

Best to Whit on her exams and we'll be glad for her to be home to stay in a few days-ah.

First Night of The Jam

We had The Bluegrass Jam tonight (Dec. 5th), and the turnout was great! A LOT of musicians and listeners were there and from what everyone was saying, they all had a really fun time! There were actually 2 rooms going with folks jamming in both rooms.

Before I forget, I want to let you all know that we won't be having the Dec. 19th Jam due to scheduling conflicts. But, we will be back on track for Friday, Jan. 2nd!

Anyways, we appreciate all that came out and support us in our first night of The Jam! This is really going to be a fun thing to do and come to throughout the coming months. It's really nice to see everyone having a good time and all of the musicians feeling included and important...

Weekly Update - Second Week of Recording

We all went and worked on laying down some more tracks for our new recording tonight (Tues., Dec. 2nd). Thanks to our gracious hosts for everything!

We laid down the rhythm tracks for 5 songs. It's sounding realllly good already and that just makes us more and more excited about this cd.

We'll add more details about the process, where we're recording, who's doing the recording, what's going to be on the recording, etc., soon - it's cool.

Like I said last week, I'm really proud of the folks in Southern Accent - they ain't no slackers, I can tell ya that. We all work really hard at what we do, and the Lord blesses us with great friendships, great fellowship time, and it's truly a joy to do what we do!

We're having our Southern Accent Christmas party this Sunday - it's fun to get together and chat and exchange gifts. My kids are all excited about seeing everyone again - they haven't seen the folks in the group since a couple weekends ago...

We're also very excited about the kickoff for The Bluegrass Jam, which is this Friday, Dec. 5th...we're looking forward to having this every 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month!

First Night of Recording

We had our first night of recording on our new CD tonight. It went really, really well. The atmosphere was relaxing, everyone was enjoying time spent together, and we accomplished what we set out to do. I'm proud of the great job everyone did -- y'all are the best-ah!

We laid down rhythm tracks and lead vocals on three songs. We're going to try something different for this next CD, and I'll fill y'all in on the details very soon!

Weekly Update - South Fork & Little Milligan

Last Tuesday, November 18th, we met for practice and worked on a new gospel song that Gary had written that previous Sunday. He said that he had woke up that morning and the words came to him, and he had the song written in just a short time. Dennis and Gary worked on the melody of the song, and when Blake got there, it just all came together. The arrangement of the song was truly a group effort, and I'm proud of how it turned out for Gary. The name of the song is, "The Lonely Road." Great song, Triv.

Let's see...Saturday, Nov. 22nd, we met at South Fork Church in Todd for a singing service. We're always made to feel so welcomed there and enjoy visiting with the congregation and pastor. Whitney's friend, Valerie, came along and my boys took to her immediately. They are such loving kids - and cute, too, I might add :) We went to Dos Amigos in Boone for supper afterwards and had a great time fellowshipping with each other - it's wonderful to spend time with friends!

Sunday, Nov. 23rd, we sang at Little Milligan Church in TN. The pastor there had some very encouraging words for us, and we appreciate what he said...Our friend, Cory Pittman, came with Blake, Whitney, and Valerie and played fiddle with us - he's a great musician and loves the Lord. We're gearing up to record some on Tuesday evening. The songs that we have lined up to record are all enjoyable to sing/play and everyone is really looking forward to a recording with Blake.

Saturday, Nov. 15th, we visited the folks at Piney Ridge Church in Millers Creek (between Ashe and Wilkes counties). Thanks to everyone there for the warm welcome (on the especially cold evening, weatherwise) and for the invitation...looking forward to being back with y'all next year!

Sunday, Nov. 16th, we popped over to Mountain City and attended Sunday School with Corinth Baptist before the singing service during the worship hour. Great Sunday School lesson and service!

We're looking forward to Tuesday's practice and working on the songs we're going to record.

We're getting ready to take some time "off" from singing during the winter, but will keep up on our practice nights and work on material for a new CD. The problem with recordings is, there are SO many cool songs and picking out 12-15 of 'em is a hard job...

WKGX Bluegrass Breakfast

Connie, Blake, and I went down to Lenoir and met with Chuck Charles from WKGX 1080AM, the nation's only all-bluegrass radio station. Connie's brother, Andy Trivette, has been spending some time at the station and had asked us to come down on Veteran's Day to visit and play a few songs on-air.

We played, "Paul and Peter Walked," "The Road Less Traveled," and "Born Again" for listeners. Andy played lead guitar for us since Dennis couldn't be there. Blake, of course, was on mando, and I was on bass. Gary had to work, too, and he and Dennis were missed.

WKGX is a great station if you need a bluegrass fix everyday - and who doesn't?!?!?!?!?

Weekly Update - Little Milligan School & God's House of Worship

We had a birthday party for Joshua and Daniel at Shirley's Restaurant in Butler, Tennessee, this Saturday. They got to see their sisiters, Mimi and Laura, and neice, Hailey. All of Southern Accent were there, Whitney, and also their mamaw, June. (The picture at the right is of Mimi, Dennis, Laura, Mamaw, Joshua and Daniel)

Later that Saturday evening, we visited Little Milligan School in Tennessee and helped out with a benefit evening for Maxine Whaley. There was a great turnout. We sang first, and then the Family Ties band, and a group called The Brotherhood went afterward. My kids really enjoyed participating in the cake walks and playing with new friends between groups. Dennis' mom, June went with us and had a good time, too.

Sunday, we sang at God's House of Worship in Banner Elk. Saw a lot of old friends there and enjoyed visiting with them!

Whitney only has a short time left at Gardner-Webb University before she transfers to ASU. We pray that her exams go well! Go, Whitney-uh! :)

Weekly Update - Cranberry & Rainbow Mennonite

Saturday, Nov. 1st, we attended Cranberry Baptist for a singing. We enjoyed the service, but the mood was sad among those attending the service because one of their fellow church members was hurt badly in a car accident and is going to have to undergo numerous surgeries. Our prayers are with him and his family.

The Bluegrass Jam

Great news!

Southern Accent is going to be hosting and Gary Trivette Electric is sponsoring a bluegrass and gospel jam on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month, beginning December 5th!

The Bluegrass Jam is in memory of Auborn Trivette, Ronnie Hicks, and Paul Buchanan.

Location: Western Watauga Community Center, 1080 Old US Hwy 421 in Sugar Grove (Cove Creek)

Time: 7:30pm until 11:00pm

When: Every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month.

Our goal is that everyone that wants to participate will be able to and that everyone that attends will have a good time and great fellowship!
Acoustic instruments only, please.
All are invited to come and jam or just to listen.
There is plenty of parking at the facility.

Weekly Update - Gospel Jam, Shirley's & Bristol Baptist

Well, as of last night (October 27th), we have had our first snow!

Last week, we sang at the revival at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, where Brother Dewey Williams was preaching. Enjoyed the messages he preached and his dedication to the Lord. The website for his church in Bristol VA/TN is http://www.bellemeadows.org/

The bluegrass gospel jam on Saturday was a success with many folks showing up to sing and pick. We jammed for about 4 hours, with lunch in between, and everyone had a great time. The pictures to the right are some from that day. We appreciate everyone that came out...we'll do it again soon! Shirley's on Saturday evening was fun, as always. Jeff Sharpe and his mom, Shirley, and all of the staff there are very sweet to us! We saw our newlywed friends, Terri and Phil Whittington, and their family - they were celebrating their new marriage!

Gospel Jam Update

Hey! Sounds like there might be some cold/rainy weather this Saturday, which is the date planned for the Gospel Jam.

Unless the weather forecast significantly improves, we're going to plan on having the jam at the Fall Creek Fire Station #2, which is on Buckeye Road...can't miss it.

Weekly Update - Valle Country, Stanton Benefit & Big Crabtree

Hope that all of you survived the COLD weather this weekend!

The crowd at the Valle Country Fair was enormous with a continuous string of vehicles pouring into the fair grounds. To all of you folks that braved the frigid weather to hear the music of the day, "Thank you - ya'll are true music lovers!" Blake said that his grandpaw said the weather got so cold the other night that he had trouble sleeping because of the noise his dentures made in the cup from chattering all night! LOL!

The benefit for the family of Johnny Stanton was well-attended and a great success. We were among many friends and fellow musicians and that made for a very blessed evening. I'll give ya'll the tally as I have it...p.s. Tommy Harmon, we all thought you looked like you felt a whole lot better after your surgery. Phyllis has reallllllllllly got her hands full now! :) luv ya!

Thanks to the folks at Big Crabtree Church for your hospitality and love. We wish the best for Pastor Honeycutt and his family as they follow the leadership of the Lord in their lives.

Also, if possible, plan to attend Beaver Dam Church's revival this week starting Monday at 7pm.

Bluegrass Gospel Autumn Jam

We are hosting a bluegrass gospel jam Sat., Oct. 25th. It'll be from 10am until 2pm.

Directions: 421 towards Mtn. City, left on 321 at Skateworld, left on Buckeye Road at the Watauga/Avery county line, right on Phillip Road. Jam held at 195 Phillip Road - this is only about 25 minutes from Boone.

Connie brought up the idea some time back, and we all thought it was great...

We want to have this jam to let folks come out and play and sing their favorite gospel songs/hymns. Listeners are also invited!

We ask that you bring a chair, your instrument, some songs that are familiar to most, and have fun...

We'll have lunch that will include chili or vegetable soup, dessert, coffee, soft drinks.

There is limited parking available, but we'll be able to use the Fall Creek Station 2 parking lot and shuttle folks to and from there, if necessary.

Rested Up!

Well, we've had a great 2 weeks off, and if everyone in the group is like me, I'm realllllllly looking forward to getting back to playing!

Having time to rest is very important, but that time gives you a chance to reflect on the importance of what we're doing and how much we all enjoy it!

Dennis and I and the kids went to Pigeon Forge (whew!) for a few days and then shot down to Bryson City for a 4-hour train ride. We had a good time and enjoyed seeing the kids have fun.

Gary and Tina are doing some remodeling on their house, and from what Dennis says, it looks great!

Connie has been doing some refurbishing in a room in her house, turning it into a sort of workroom for herself...you go, girl!

Blake had some vacation time in Pigeon Forge, too!

Friends of the late Johnny Stanton are organizing a benefit singing for his family on Saturday, October 18th, at the Roan Creek Elementary School in Mountain City, TN. The singing will start at 5:30pm and last until around 10pm.

For only $7.00, you'll get 2 hotdogs, chips, a drink, and a dessert, plus an entire evening of some great gospel music!

Additional donations will be appreciated.

Westview and Grayson Highlands

Ok. First off, that picture is NOT Gary Trivette, ya'll. It's a horse. A horse. Geesh!

Anyways, this is one of the two beautiful horses that were at the Grayson Highlands Festival in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, this Sunday. They were working at helping to get the sugar out of the sugar cane for the making of molasses.

We in Southern Accent were a little disappointed that we missed out on getting some of that delicious apple butter that had been in the works all day! Wah!

We had a great time, as usual, singing at the festival. We sang at 1:30pm. There were a lot of other great groups there, too, and we enjoyed getting to spend some time before and after hearing them.

On Saturday, we sang at Westview Church in Boone. There was a multi-church choir there, too, and they sang 5-6 songs. It was a very enjoyable evening!
